A victory for cheapskates

I cringe as I type the words “only $15 million,” but the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” won eight Oscars Sunday night on a budget of only $15 million. That’s one tenth of the $150 million budget for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” the movie favored to win best picture. But all that money couldn’t guarantee a victory, and Slumdog took the top honor.

Slumdog was one of only three movies I have seen that were nominated in any category, so I guess I am a little biased, but I really liked the film even before I knew how little it cost to produce. And I am glad I paid full price for what turned out to be the best movie of the year. I will be renting the rest for $1 a night at the handy Redboxes sprinkled around the valley.
