Cashing in while eating out

Eating out may not be the cheapest way of meeting your daily caloric needs, but there are definitely ways to cut corners:going out to lunch instead of dinner, ordering appetizers rather than entrees or opting for less expensive restaurants like locals seem to be doing lately. I’ve even been known to bring my own tea bags and ask for a cup of hot water — free, of course.

A Mail Tribune article on splitting meals, however, took even me by surprise. Not the fact that more people are splitting meals, but the lengths that they will go to save a buck or two. One restaurant manager said he saw three diners split a single glass of iced tea!

Desperate times call for desperate measures, I suppose. No one at the restaurant stopped the thrifty tea-drinkers. The server offered them free refills instead.
