Ever heard of geocaching?
If you’ve never tried it, Saturday might be the day to do so in a countywide event sponsored by the Jackson County Library.
The day combines two of my favorite free activities — hiking and reading library books — in a treasure hunt for copies of the book “Bat 6″ by Virginia Euwer Wolff.
On Saturday, the library will post geographic coordinates of five copies of the book hidden in five different areas: Ashland, Talent and Phoenix; Medford; Upper Rogue; Applegate, Jacksonville and Ruch; and Rogue River, Central Point, Gold Hill and White City. Check geocaching.com to start the hunt.
Treasure seekers are encouraged to autograph the inside cover of the book and leave it for the next finder, and the library promises to publish a list of all who found the book in the newspaper on April 13. The hunt is part of a slew of events for Oregon Reads 2009, celebrating Oregon’s 150th birthday.
Saturday’s forecast calls for a high of 50 degrees, with a chance of rain in the afternoon. So get out early and start searching!
P.S. I will be gone next week, so don’t worry about the Cheapskating hiatus — I am not wandering lost in the woods searching for hidden books!
