Speer named All-American

Southern Oregon’s double-double machine, Jacki Speer, received some NAIA props recently. Here’s the story, courtesy of SOU: Southern Oregon junior post Jacki Speer has been named Third Team NAIA All-American. Speer, a first-team All-Cascade Conference selection, averaged 16.6 points and 11.3 rebounds during the 2008-09 season. The Washington product had 22 double-doubles on the season [...]

Top 10 AHS athletes

It’s a 100-way tie. OK, now that I have you, here’s the deal: I need to know where all those former Ashland High athletes who are still competing at the next level are at now. I’m not talking about Sam Gaviglio, Ryan Pittman, Matt Miner, Natalie Hemphill, Stephanie Johns, April Jorgensen or Max Gordon. They [...]

More Gaviglio

I may have to change the name of this blog to the “All Gaviglio, all the time” page if the former Ashland High pitcher keeps playing the way he is. Gaviglio, a true freshman at Oregon State, pitched 6 1-3 scoreless innings Sunday against Missouri State, which still won the game 4-2 (all MSU’s runs [...]

Johns 52nd at invite; Gordon still hitting

Former Ashland High grad Stephanie Johns shot a team-low 72 in the second round to help Portland State place ninth in the Red Rocks Invitational Sunday at Sedona, Ariz. Johns and company will compete in the Duck Invitational, March 23-24 at Shadow Hills Country Club in Eugene. Also representing Ashland High well is Max Gordon. [...]

Root for Crater? Why not?

Several Ashland High boys basketball players told me after last Saturday’s playoff loss to No. 2 Wilsonville that they will be rooting for the Wildcats at the state tournament. They should root for Crater, too, because when it comes to basketball, the Southern Sky Conference hasn’t really proven that it can hang with the state’s [...]

One and done for Raiders

By Barry Poe For the Tidings SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Perhaps it’s time for the Dakota Athletic Conference to make some major noise in the NAIA Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament. No. 11 Black Hills State, one of three DAC teams playing in the 12th staging of the national tournament in Sioux City, got [...]

Menefee blows up

While the Cascade Collegiate Conference has struggled to gain respect in the women’s NAIA Division II basketball tournament, the same cannot be said on the men’s side. Evergreen State, one of four CCC men’s teams to qualify, continued that trend today with a 101-86 win over No. 11 Bluefield College that was highlighted by Nathan [...]

And then there were two (CCC teams left)

That didn’t take long. The College of Idaho women’s basketball team became the first Cascade Collegiate Conference team to get bounced from the NAIA Division II basketball tournament this afternoon. The No. 14-ranked Coyotes turned the ball over 25 times and were outrebounded 51-35 in a 76-64 first-round loss to No. 18 Hastings (Neb.) at [...]

Raider March Madness, in links

The Southern Oregon women’s basketball team has arrived in Sioux City, Iowa, for the NAIA Division II National Championship, and here’s hoping that this year’s trip is a little more enjoyable than last year’s – for everybody (players, coaches, fans, innocent bystanders who happen to glance toward the court). The No. 23 Raiders play No. 10 Black [...]

Gaviglio gets win No. 2

Sam Gaviglio just keeps pitching at Oregon State as if he’s still at Ashland High. The Beavers’ freshman pitcher scattered four hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief to help Oregon State beat UC Riverside 5-1 on Saturday. He entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out with the game tied 0-0 in [...]
