Ashland water polo teams dominate weekend

It didn’t get in today’s paper, but the Ashland High water polo teams – both the boys and the girls – rolled through two Southern League matches this weekend. The Grizz boys played South Eugene and nearly pulled off the shocker against the 6A powerhouse before losing by a goal. I’m working on a story [...]

Raiders give back

For all those cynics out there who believe the average 20-something American is more concerned with his or her iPod playlist than they are with the world around them, I submit this: Southern Oregon football coach Steve Helminiak was contacted last week by a representative of the Children’s Miracle Network, a non-profit organization that raises [...]

Pay back, Duck style

Here’s something you don’t see everyday – a major college football program that’s giving away money instead of gobbling it up in huge swaths. Oregon football coach Chip Kelly is making national headlines (ESPN, NY Times, MyFoxNepa) today for refunding $439 of travel costs to a disgruntled fan who traveled to Boise, Idaho, to watch [...]

AHS pot testing

I talked to Ashland High head football coach Charlie Hall on Thursday about his unsuccessful attempt to institute a drug testing program at the school. Much of what he said has already been covered – our story ran Sept. 15, the day after the school board decided to “table” the idea – but one thing [...]

Phillips Field Marshfield 14 7 7 7 — 35 Ashland 0 0 0 6 — [...]
