Amy’s Kitchen ready to build eastern outpost

Having scrapped efforts to build a plant in South Carolina, Amy’s Kitchen has turned its sights north.

The Petaluma, Calif-based organic frozen food maker now plans to build an east coast plant in Goshen, N.Y. between Interstates 84 and 86 near Middletown.

Amy’s Kitchen told the  Orange County Industrial Development Agency it wants to build a 350,000- to 500,000-square-foot plant that would employ 681 people earning between $20,000 and $150,000 a year. The company proposes a $95 million, project on 200 acres on a former sand and gravel quarry.

Amy’s Kitchen opened its second plant here in the Rogue Valley in 2006 and recently went through a $19 million expansion. The firm has 1,900 employees between the north Bay Area and White city. While two-thirds of of its ingredients are produced in the West, most of its sales are east of the Mississippi River.
