Random thoughts:
The recent wintry weather has done to high school schedules what spring rains do for baseball, softball and tennis. It’s made a mess of them with cancellations. If anyone needs an aspirin because of it, it’s Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse, whose three-day, 32-team tournament that began today has been turned upside down. They’re marching on with games as they can, but the pre-determined schedule is a shell of itself.

Something I saw: At 7:15 one recent morning, five members of the Crater cross country program running in the dark and fog, waiting to cross Highway 99 at Scenic Drive. Three gals, two guys, one of whom was Josh Elliott, the Class 5A state champion this past fall. As I waited for them to cross, it struck me this was one reason the Comets have won three boys state titles and one girls crown in the past three years.

Something I heard: A Baltimore Ravens radio analyst saying — after a controversial late TD by Pittsburgh allowed the Steelers to prevail Sunday — we need replay because you have relatively out-of-shape officials trying to keep up with world-class athletes (makes sense). He also said full-time officials are necessary and that they need to be younger and better trained … His point: You have billion dollar franchises and facilities and the equivalent of weekend golfers overseeing the games.

Rob Moseley of the Eugene Register-Guard did a nice story on the Ducks and the teammate they lost this past summer through a drowning accident. Read it here.
