Well, we tried to have a gathering of local sports media folks, but it didn’t come off too well. Actually, it didn’t come off at all as almost no one showed up for this session of the Third Monday Talks, a program sponsored by the Friends of the Medford Library. I should say a nice gentleman shook all our hands and thanked us for devoting time to the program. Unfortunately, this third Monday fell on a holiday, Martin Luther King Day, and we suspect that played a big part in the lack of a turnout.
The plan is to reschedule in the next couple months. Those of us on hand to talk about our profession — Joe Camarlinghi, KOBI Channel 5 television; Melissa Enfield, KTVL Channel 10; Will Southwood, KDRV Channel 12; and Demi DeSoto, local radio — agreed it was worthwhile in our sports-oriented area. We could be wrong, but we’re not ready to admit that yet.
Anyway, we’ll get notices out for the next one. The plan was to talk a little about our backgrounds and how we got into the profession, then we had a list of topics the moderator put together for potential areas of discussion: Describe a favorite sports experience (got a few of those); predict Super Bowl winner (it’ll be easy by the time we meet again); talk about local sports, like the recent PBA event (or whatever’s more current next time); talk about national sports; take questions from the audience (I think I know what the first one would be); anything else we could think of that would be of interest.
It should be fun. Hopefully others will join us.
