Duke coverage is here to stay

I got a phone message Monday. The guy seemed in good spirits, but there was more than a hint of sarcasm in his voice. He couldn’t believe he opened his paper and didn’t see a photo of Kyle Singler. We get that from time to time. While I suspect the vast majority of readers enjoy following the Medford native at Duke, there are those who wish we’d dial it back as if he were a walk-on at Small Time JC.

That won’t happen.

For as long as Singler is the driving force at one of the top programs in the land, we’ll treat Duke as if it’s a local team. Not quite to Oregon and Oregon State standards, but certainly to a greater degree than any other Division I team. The Blue Devils will get play on our cover, they will lead roundups and they will have some breakout treatment on inside pages. We’re just going to have to trust our judgment on this one.

So you can expect decent coverage in tomorrow’s (Thursday’s) paper of the game tonight between Duke, which ascended to the No. 1 ranking on Monday, on the road against No. 6 Wake Forest, which has one loss and was No. 1 before the Blue Devils. It’s on ESPN at 4 p.m. The Blue Devils could follow the path of so many recent No. 1s and not stay at the top long. The Atlantic Coast Conference is pretty tough, you know. But we’ll see. Should be a great game.

Here’s a breakdown of it at Sporting News Today.

And one from the News-Record in North Carolina.
