There’s been some anticipation about what kind of talent Oregon State basketball coach Craig Robinson could attract with his successful debut season with the Beavers and his relationship to President Obama. Results are starting to come in.
Robinson announced on Wednesday the signing Jared Cunningham to a letter of intent. Cunningham is a 6-foot-3 point guard out of San Leandro (Calif.) High School, and is considered among the nation’s best. He’s ranked No. 14 at his position nationally and No. 76 overall by rivals.com.
In October 2007, Cunningham, interested in having his college choice made before his junior season, verbally committed to Arizona State. That decision obviously didn’t stick.
Cunningham’s per-game averages as a senior were 20.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.0 steals. San Leandro was 24-4 and won the Hayward Area league title.
“Jared (Cunningham) is a big guard who is a leader,” Robinson said in a release. “He is an athletic player who is able to score and likes to get everyone involved. He certainly has a bright future and should excel in this system.” The Beavers earlier signed two players. Shooting guard Roberto Nelson, like Cunningham, is a four-star recruit out of Santa Barbara, Calif., and center Joe Burton is a three-star recruit from Hemet, Calif.
OSU expects to sign two more players during the early signing period, which runs through May 20.
According to rivals, the Beavers have commitments from center Angus Brandt of Lake Forest, Ill, and forward Rhys Murphy from Lee, Me. Both are rated three-star recruits.
