This from the in-case-you-missed-it department: Kellie Schueler of Summit High in Bend showed us that her dominating performance 1 1/2 weeks ago at the Crater Rotary Classic was just a preview of what was to come. The junior sprinter wowed the crowd at last weekend’s Oregon Relays at Hayward Field in Eugene by covering the 100 in a wind-aided 11.73 seconds. That time was faster than the winning NCAA Division I mark of 11.90 by Wichita State’s Audacia Moore. It was the same in the 200, where Schueler’s time of 24.75 was better than the 24.93 of open winner Leah Worthen of Oregon. Schueler has gone 23.95 in the 200, and her marks in the two short races are the fastest in 41 years in Oregon prep circles.
A week earlier, Schueler burned up the Crater High track with meet records in the 200 and 400. She won four state track titles as both a freshman and sophomore. Her goal is to win 16 by the time she graduates.
Baylee Hearns of North Medford, it should be noted, ran 12.36 in the 100 last weekend. Her time would have tied for fourth in the open division.
The fastest girl sprinter in the country is Chalonda Goodman of Newnan High in Georgia. She’s gone 11.30 and 23.32 and figures to be in the 2012 Olympics.
