A golf treat
I finally got the chance to play Pacific Dunes at the Bandon Dunes Resort on Thursday, and what a treat. The wind was up for the afternoon round — a precursor to a preview round this morning at the resort’s fourth course, Old Macdonald. But not even a three-club wind could mar the experience on [...]

Beavers don’t have much regional experience
Here are some notes via an e-mail from Oregon State about the Beavers’ baseball team and its pending NCAA tournament appearance. OSU plays Texas A&M at noon our time on Friday in the Fort Worth, Texas, regional:
Regional Experience
Of the 35 players on the Oregon State active roster, just six have NCAA Regional experience, and only [...]

Beavers in Forth Worth Regional
(Edit: The OSU-A&M game is Friday at noon Pacific)
The baseball season just keeps getting better for Oregon State and local players Sam Gaviglio of Ashland and Rob Folsom and Logan Boyd of Medford. The No. 3-seeded Beavers were selected to play in the Fort Worth Regional of the NCAA tournament this weekend, joining No. 1 [...]

Reader feels Crater was slighted
Some follow-up from state track:
I may have slighted the Crater Comet boys track and field team for not putting more emphasis on its second-place finish in the 5A team race Saturday at Hayward Field. It wasn’t intentional, surely, but it was apparent to at least one e-mailer. The finish was the Comets’ best at state [...]

Day 2 of 6A/5A/4A state track meet
7:02 p.m. — Well, better sign off. Been writing stories, hence no recent updates, but the announcer just called the last of the team awards and sent everyone home.

5:36 p.m. — There hasn’t been too much involving local kids recently. Micah Diaz of South Medford was fifth in 39.89 in the 6A boys 300 hurdle. Taylor [...]

###
7:27 p.m. — Crater wins its 4×400 boys heat in 3:26.13. Earlier, Jantzer had a 49-flat final leg as the Phoenix boys won their heat in 3:27.7 to lead all qualifiers.

Schnugg, Georgia bumped from NCAAs
Former North Medford tennis player Nate Schnugg and the Georgia Bulldogs won’t defend the NCAA team championship they won the past two years. Texas, ranked 12th, saw to that with a 4-2 win on Sunday in the quarterfinals. The loss snapped Georgia’s 15-match NCAA tournament winning streak. Georgia’s (25-4) last tourney loss was in the [...]

Late starts threw us off track
Here’s hoping the Southern Sky and Skyline conferences reconsider their meet schedules if they plan to hold simultaneous district track championships again. The last couple events didn’t begin until after 8 p.m. Saturday, which makes it very difficult for us news organizations to provide adequate, next-day coverage.
On the one hand, with such a busy day with [...]

Milhollin’s confidence on the rise
Josh Milhollin barely missed a personal-best 6-8 in the high jump Thursday at the Southwest Conference track meet. It might not be long in coming, however. His form was good, getting his shoulders and hips over the bar but just failing to kick his heels out in time.
“That’s the good thing,” said Milhollin, a junior, [...]
