Milhollin’s confidence on the rise

Josh Milhollin barely missed a personal-best 6-8 in the high jump Thursday at the Southwest Conference track meet. It might not be long in coming, however. His form was good, getting his shoulders and hips over the bar but just failing to kick his heels out in time.

“That’s the good thing,” said Milhollin, a junior, who bested North Medford senior Josh Pecktol, the state-leader at 6-10. Milhollin won at 6-6, one inch below his best, and Pecktol went 6-4 for second.

Neither had done better than 6-4 prior to this season, an indication that once a mark is hit, it’s easier to do again. Like golf. Break 90 for the first time and it happens more frequently.

“With every inch you go up, the more confident you get for the next meet or the next attempt,” said Milhollin. “The high jump is all about mental.”
