Here’s hoping the Southern Sky and Skyline conferences reconsider their meet schedules if they plan to hold simultaneous district track championships again. The last couple events didn’t begin until after 8 p.m. Saturday, which makes it very difficult for us news organizations to provide adequate, next-day coverage.
On the one hand, with such a busy day with small-school state meets, district meets in the larger conferences, district tennis and a decent slate of baseball and softball doubleheaders, not having to worry about the SSC and Skyline meets at the same time was helpful. Things were spread out, so we got calls from coaches and took care of them in a comfortable progression.
On the other hand, by the time we got word of what happened at the aforementioned meets in Klamath Falls, we had time only for cursory stories and reduced agate results (top three rather than the intended top six in each event). Don’t get me wrong, the folks running the meet did all they could to help us. The time frame — first field event at 2, first running event at 4 — just made it difficult and hindered coverage. Starting a couple hours earlier would help at this end.
