I finally got the chance to play Pacific Dunes at the Bandon Dunes Resort on Thursday, and what a treat. The wind was up for the afternoon round — a precursor to a preview round this morning at the resort’s fourth course, Old Macdonald. But not even a three-club wind could mar the experience on the layout fast by the Pacific Ocean. The best line I heard during the round was on the fourth hole, the first one that takes you straight along an expanse of quiet, peaceful beach. My caddie told me there was plenty of room left off the tee. I didn’t heed his advice and sent my shot west.
He noted with a dry sense of humor and a wave of his hand that it was an odd route choice given I had “48 states to play with over here.”
Looking forward to Old Mac today. There are 10 holes open for preview play to the public. The course is scheduled to open next year about this time. I’ll write about it in my Saturday “Tee Talk” column.
