Gaviglio garners honors as summer nears

Oregon State’s Sam Gaviglio is raking in the honors as he readies for a summer season in the West Coast Baseball League. No, the Ashland product won’t play for or against the Southern Oregon RiverDawgs. He’ll be with the Corvallis Knights, who play in a different division of the WCBL, and is expected to make his first start Saturday against Bellingham, Wash. OSU teammates James Nygren, Carter Bell and Brent Warren are on the team.

Gaviglio was selected to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association first team most recently. Earlier, he was put on the Louisville Slugger and Ping! Baseball freshman first units.

Gaviglio set an Oregon State freshman record by going 10-1 and posted a 2.73 ERA with the Beavers. He won his last seven starts, including a victory in the Fort Worth Regional opener against Texas A&M.

On the season, Gaviglio worked 62 2/3 innings in 2009, striking out 55 while walking just nine. Opponents batted .200 against him.
