On soccer and really long distance running

I’ll be the first to admit I’m a football guy, not a soccer guy. It has more to do with the era in which I grew up, I suppose. Nonetheless, I was as interested in today’s Confed Cup title match between the U.S. and Brazil as any soccer match I can remember. I might have even watched it on TV had I been around, but as soon as I got home I searched out a story on it. That never happens. It’s a shame to see the Americans got so close to the supposedly unattainable before falling, 3-2. Here’s hoping it signals the start of something big and that we return to a grand stage sooner rather than later.

On another note, when I got to the office a little bit ago, I discovered Ashland runner Hal Koerner had again won the Western States 100-miler. I can’t imagine running around the block, let alone 100 miles. It was a successful title defense of sorts. Koerner won in 2007, but last year’s race was called off because of wild fires. It’s the most prestigious race of its kind in the U.S., apparently, and it took him more than 16 hours.
