Two-time defending champion Medford won its American Legion AAA state tournament opener this morning, downing Northwest Star Academy 6-0 at Hansen Stadium in Corvallis.
Jordan Lewis pitched seven shutout innings, raising his record to 8-1, and Ian Kendall and Griff Boyd belted back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to set the final score. The Mustangs had eight hits and one error in improving to 37-8. Northwest Star had six hits and four errors.
The Mustangs next play at 4 p.m. Thursday against the winner today between Canby and Roseburg.
