Mike Barry of Medford bogeyed the first playoff hole at the U.S. Amateur moments ago and was eliminated from the tournament at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Twenty-seven players who tied at 8 over par in qualifying competed for four open spots in the 64-man match-play bracket. The playoff began on the difficult, 220-yard 14th hole, a par 3 with lots of bunkering around it.
Two players birdied to advance into match play, leaving 11 others who parred the hole to play for the final two berths. Fourteen players were eliminated on the first hole with bogey or worse.
