Are PKs OK?

I’m no soccer buff, but it seems to me the tiebreaker of taking penalty kicks rings hollow when deciding a winner, much less a champion. That’s what happened in the MLS championship, with underdog Real Salt Lake downing the Los Angeles Galaxy, 5-4, on PKs. Does taking shot after shot at the goal really prove which is the best team? Why not just go to sudden death? Somone’s gonna score sometime and it would be decided on the pitch (soccer term).

PKs seem to me like basketball teams playing four quarters, another quarter or two of overtime, then taking turns shooting free throws to determine a winner.
