Allison Gida showed what a hot-shot she is Monday in the South Coast Les Schwab Holiday Tournament at Marshfield High. Sure, the Ashland senior did fine in the game, scoring 19 points in a rout of North Bend, but it was her exhibition at halftime of the preceding game that opened eyes.
As part of the tournament fun, three players from other teams are called to the floor at halftime of a game they’re watching. Gida went to midcourt with two boys from other teams at intermission of the Grants Pass-Willamette girls game. The boys went first, trying to make as many shots from half court in 30 seconds as they could. They didn’t make any and struggled to get the ball to the basket, recounted Grizzlies coach Tom McCracken.
Gida, still wearing her letterman’s jacket, then stepped up. Being a girl, the University of Utah signee was allowed to move quite a bit closer but declined. She then launched one shot, jacket and all, and watched it swish through the hoop. As the crowd reacted with astonishment, she casually returned to the stands as if there was nothing to it.
