Latest video on Singler playing in Spain

Here’s a video I received of Kyle Singler’s game today in Spain. Singler is shown making a 3-pointer, but most of the highlights are of the other team and a few are instances where Singler was beaten while on defense. It’s been an interesting process translating the information we’ve gotten from Spain. I did find the box score from today’s game, and Singler’s Lucentum Alicante team lost 86-61 to Cajasol Banca Civica.

Singler had 12 points, making 4 of 13 from the field, including 1 of 4 on 3s. He had three rebounds, all offensive.

For pickers, a swing-and-a-miss on Panthers

Turns out some people noticed that South Medford wasn’t a popular choice when we did the Mail Tribune Pick-It Line in Friday’s paper. Everyone predicted Roseburg would defeat the Panthers, save for guest picker Dick Entinger. Apart from going against the home-town Panthers — and what would be the point if we all always took local teams? — it seemed reasonable  to go with Roseburg. They were unbeaten, ranked third in the state (one spot higher than South), playing at home and going for their third straight win in the series.

Well, of course the Panthers won. In a performance that showed enormous will and character, to say nothing of talent, the Panthers rallied from an early two-touchdown deficit for a 28-14 victory. Good for them. That’s a triumph those kids will remember for a lifetime.

Naturally, people took note of our predictions and once the game was in hand let us know about it. That’s fine. It’s all in good fun. Our reporter on the scene, Kris Henry, was in the fish barrel and was roundly targeted for ribbing. He took it in stride. “To the victor goes the spoils,” he emailed us well after the excitement of the evening quelled.

I heard we got needled on the radio and that Mike Johnston, an assistant with South, used our picks as a motivating tool in the locker room. Mike coached Eagle Point years ago when all but one of us picked against his team; that night, the Eagles won, and Johnson tossed his EP shirt to a reporter and told him to give it to Greg Stiles, the one picker who sided with Eagles. One coached texted me early this season when he was on the bus home and I was in bed: “You should have picked us,” he wrote, adding a smiley face.

It’s all good. We have fun with the predictions and they’re followed closely by a lot of readers.

On Facebook late last night, I noted how we had missed so badly. One of the responses was, “If (Roseburg coach) Thurman Bell won’t give us blackboard material, then I guess we’ll use the Mail Tribune sports writers.” It was followed by three exclamation points, a “Haha” and “Go Panthers!”

Another admonished us, “NEVER pick against a panther!!!!”

A third was more level-headed. Of course, it came from a former reporter of ours who has been in the trenches when a pick went south, or South. “Hindsight is 20-20,” he reasoned.

Truth be told, we were excited for South and its victory, just as we cringe a bit when things don’t go well for a local team. We don’t brazenly cheer for or root against teams, but we’ve all been here a long time and have ties and relationships within the community. Objectivity is important to us, but, heck, we’re human. So, here’s to South for a great win and here’s to the Pick-It Line, an inexact science that we’ll delve into again next week.

Let’s see what the runners have at the Chieftain

It’ll be interesting to see how the Chieftain Invitational cross country meet shakes out Saturday at Valley of the Rogue State Park, if for no other reason than to get a read on where Crater and some of the other local teams are.

Crater’s boys have won five straight state championships, which is second all-time. They’ve run two races in California and also the Southwest Conference pre-district meet. Don’t know much about what they did in Cali, but they were fifth in the SWC at Springfield – without really trying. Their top kids ran back in the pack, most likely to encourage and bring along teammates. But we had a couple of Comet runners on MT Sports Chat today, and Sarah Hastings and Neil Seibert seemed excited about their teams’ 2011 prospects.

South and North Medford were second and third, respectively, in the boys pre-district. North won’t run the Chieftain. It ran at Stanford last week, has another big meet in a couple weeks, then won’t go all out again until the district meet.

At this point, no local runners are in the top 10 in the overall state rankings. I suspect that will change eventually, and today’s Saturday’s as good as any to start.

South and most of the other area teams will be in the Chieftain, which continues to gain in popularity with local teams after a few years when those numbers dwindled.

Crater competes in the Chieftain Invitational at Valley of the Rogue State Park on Saturday.

South’s Singler chosen for ESPNHS honor

Jack Singler

Jack Singler

It was a difficult choice picking Athlete of the Week candidates to vote on based on performances last week. At least, from South Medford’s football game against Crater, when quarterback Jack Singler and slot receiver Matt Retzlaff each went absolutely off. I went with Retzlaff because he set a couple of single-game school records for receptions (13) and yards (256) and scored three TDs.

Plus, I figured, Singler has the ball in his hands every play, and he’ll get a chance to be the choice in the future. Granted Retzlaff will have numbers to be a candidate again, but next time I’ll lean another direction. (By the way, go to www.varsity541.com to vote on the five options this and every week.)

That said, Singler was recognized by ESPNHS, the sports conglomerate’s nod to prep sports. The site picks a top player from each region each week, and Singler was chosen from the West after the senior connected on 22 of 27 passes for 424 yards and five touchdowns. All of the selections were QBs, save for a running back. There are video highlights of each player, and there’s some pretty jaw-dropping stuff from all. Singler’s most impressive throw, in my view, was as the right-hander rolled to his left and threw to his left — a difficult maneuver — to find a receiver in the corner of the end zone for a TD.

Players can be selected only once for the honor.

Retzlaff didn’t exactly go unnoticed by ESPNHS. He was on the receiving end of most of Singler’s passes and is well-represented in the video.

Also getting ample play, and rightly so, is the Panthers’ offensive line, which gives Singler and Retzlaff room to operate. Maybe I’ll have to get input from coach Bill Singler on an offensive lineman to be recognized in AOW if South’s passing game continues as it has. Can’t throw if the grunts up front aren’t delivering blows. I used to be one, so I should find a way to get them in there, from South and the area’s other schools, when warranted.
